Oto-(noun) Greek ōto-, combining form of oûs, relating to the inner ear.
Acoustic- (adjective) Greek Akoutokos, relating to sound.
Every cavity creates its own sound. From a sea shell to a concert hall. Your inner ear is the cavity where the eardrum sits. Hence OtoAcoustic is the sound of your inner ear. The sound of your ear cavity colours everything you hear, from your mother’s voice to your car stereo, every sound adds into the sound of your inner ear before it is sent to the brain. When you hear nothing, you hear the sound of your own ear.
The secret to a studio with good sound is less sound. Just as the sound of your inner ear is the “noise” that gets added to the music you hear, similarly, the sound of a studio room gets added into your recording. The lower the noise floor in an audio studio, the better the recording is. Each voice, every instrument, sounds better in a room with a low noise floor. My first audio studio in Mumbai had a poor noise threshold of 55dBs! The second one (designed by Robert d’ Arcy) had an incredibly low 28dBs, in this studio I tried to get it under 20dBs, it is maybe the quietest studio room in the country. And when the room is this quiet, every inflection of every note , every shimmer, vibrato, overtone, undertone, first harmonic, second, third, all stand up to be heard, to be noticed, to be loved.
A rectangular room, also called a shoe box design, is the industry standard for an audio room. It has 4 corners and 8 edges. It has perfect front to back and top to bottom symmetry. Room corners and symmetry are the 2 main reasons for standing waves and phase cancelations. For the past 100 years we have been designing horrible sounding rooms for ourselves and then spending huge amounts of money on acoustic material to make these rooms tolerable.
The egg shaped room eliminates all corners, leaving only one edge which is used as a trap to collect and absorb all excess audio energy. Also the shape has no front to back and no top to bottom symmetry. Equally importantly, it has perfect left to right symmetry, giving the audio monitors identical environment to perform and create the perfect audio image.
Be prepared- There is no separate studio and monitor room here. The engineer, the artist and friends are all in the same room and we will monitor through headphones. It may feel a little new for a few minutes but it makes for a more intimate setting and enhances the performance of the artist. We are all in this together .
Music- I have been playing the guitar for 35 years and the violin for about 20 years. I have done a few sessions, playing for Bollywood films and documentaries. I worked as a music assistant, recording and mixing engineer and as a music producer for multiple projects. I have composed music for some small films, documentaries and advertisements. My other company “Variatus” also composes musical identity tracks for business houses.
Films- I worked as a post production engineer for Sony programs and promos. I have thousands of hours of experience in mixing audio in surround sound, 5.1, format. I have mixed multiple films and hundreds of TV & OTT shows for Sony, Star and Epic in stereo and in surround sound. OtoAcoustic is fully equipped with a Genelec 5.1 Digital Sound Processing system. It can be upgraded to a 7.1 system or even ATMOS, if the market requires it.
The next step is to capture the sound onto a system via the quietest signal chain. A high end tube mic Brauner Valvet, connected to Neve 88rlb via pure, virgin copper cables, braided and silver soldered, through the SSL SiX, going into the best analogue-to-digital converter in the world, the Prism ADA8xr.
The quality of the recorded sound will be at par with any studio in the world, I guarantee that.
And last but not the least, हिरण्यगर्भ, the one who sits inside the golden egg, namely me, Amit Kumar!
I started as an assistant at Studio synthesis Delhi, in the winter of 2000. In 2002 I moved to Mumbai and stared working as an assistant to Ram Sampat and Ashish Manchanda. Since then I have worked as a sound recordist, production engineer for Sneha Khanwalkar, KJ Singh sir. I was a post production engineer in Sony tv for about 7 years, an owner of 2 studios named “SF2 audio studio” (at Malad and Andheri, both in Mumbai). My aim in opening a studio in Chandigarh is to provide this region of the country with the same technical and artistic service that has so far been available only in Mumbai and Chennai.
I could write entire books on how we broke all industry superstitions, prejudices and bad practises to create the best sounding room in the world but the proof of the pudding is in the eating. So, come on over and get a taste of what we have to offer.
